1. What we check
We verify identity, active insurance, and a licence where the trade requires one. We do not run criminal background checks. Our trust page sets out exactly what we verify and what we do not, so you can judge for yourself.
2. Vetting a pro yourself
For licensed trades in California, you can look up any contractor licence number directly on the CSLB register. It shows status, expiry, classification and whether a bond is on file. A licence number that the pro will not give you is itself an answer.
Ask for proof of insurance for the specific job, ask for references on work of the same size, and get the quote in writing before anyone starts.
3. Meeting safely
Keep the first conversation on the platform or by phone. Have someone else at home for the first visit where you can. Do not leave a stranger alone with valuables or documents.
Trust your read of a situation. You are never obliged to let anyone into your home, and you can cancel a visit for any reason.
4. Paying safely
Never pay the full amount before work starts, and be wary of anyone who insists on cash only or asks you to pay outside the agreed method. A large deposit demanded up front is a common pattern in home-improvement fraud.
Keep receipts and written change orders. If the scope changes, get the new price in writing before the work continues.
5. Reporting a problem
Email support@heyamigo.co and tell us what happened. We investigate every report, and we remove pros who misrepresent their credentials. If you are in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services first.
